DIRECTOR OF MARKETING - Abbotsford Centre (Abbotsford, BC)


The Director of Marketing is responsible for marketing for the venue and its events. Not only will the Director of Marketing take a lead role in the advertising/ media buying, promotions, public relations and grassroots efforts for the venue and its events, but will oversee all other department members to ensure that all efforts are focused on common goals. The Director of Marketing will act as a leader and mentor for all marketing department staff. The Director of Marketing will take a very active role in the communication and support efforts for other departments such as Premium Seating, Corporate Sales and Group Sales.



  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in marketing, public relations, business administration or other related field

  • Minimum of 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in sales and/or marketing, preferably with a sports facility, convention center, performing arts facility or other multi-purpose public assembly facility

  • Communicate clearly and concisely in the English language, both orally and in writing

  • Knowledge of marketing and advertising/sponsorship program development

  • Knowledge of Public Relations

  • Knowledge of website maintenance, social networking and viral marketing

  • Knowledge of federal, provincial and local regulations

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation, graphic design, PowerPoint and Internet software

  • Familiarity with publishing software such as Microsoft Publisher, Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop

  • Familiarity with media buying and promotions

  • Work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, days, evenings, holidays, extended (long) workdays for an extended number of days as needed

Job Functions:          



  • Provide marketing support for concerts, family shows, sporting events and other miscellaneous events
  • Negotiate, close, implement and evaluate media, promotional and sponsorship deals for events
  • Responsible for the development and coordination of new marketing programs and initiatives to maximize event awareness and exposure for aforementioned events
  • Responsible for the coordination of marketing between promoters, artist management and local media
  • Responsible for the coordination of internet and database marketing programs and initiatives
  • Responsible for the creation of new, unbudgeted revenue-generating marketing programs
  • Assist in public relations efforts such as media releases, story pitches, media drops, interviews, etc.
  • Responsible for compilation of all event settlement information
  • Participate in the brainstorming sessions
  • Responsible for the career and personal growth of aforementioned department members
  • Provide experience, guidance and leadership for marketing department and other departments
  • Ensure the development, implementation and reconciliation of comprehensive marketing programs

  • Develop, monitor and evaluate annual marketing budget; set and manage achievement of department objectives

  • Develop, direct, coordinate and review the strategic plan for providing marketing services

  • Track, analyze and compare event sales information, sales by city reports and the weekly sales report to regional

  • Assist the user groups in marketing their events

  • Responsible for the creation of the Annual report and annual Marketing and Communications plan

  • Manage day-to-day promotions and event activities

  • Responsible for the management and content creation for all venue social media platforms

  • Assist in promotional efforts for community rentals and adult recreational hockey league

  • Responsible for the graphic design creation of ads for events and the venue and outsourcing when needed.

  • Responsible for the regular maintenance and updating of content on the venue website.

Media/ Public Relations

  • Plan, organize, lead and control public relations efforts for the facility

  • Negotiate advertising and media-related sponsorship agreements

  • Explore non-traditional marketing opportunities for the facility and its events

  • Develop, edit and issue press releases

  • Communicate daily with media partners, promoters and entertainment agencies to maintain cooperative, positive relationships

  • Manage public relations for the facility and events

  • Plan meetings to negotiate and research advertising mediums

  • Participate in community associations such as the  Abbotsford Executive Association and Chamber of Commerce

Venue/ Department Relations

  • Analyze challenges, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and make decisions in support of organizational objectives

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with contacts and co-workers

  • Negotiate and maintain promotional partnerships with corporate partners

  • Work directly with other departments to implement campaigns including Corporate Sales, Group Sales  and Ovations food service

  • Maintain and monitor a solid media relations program, including the creation of media releases and the coordination of interviews and media requests for information on the event, facility or staff

  • Promote HYD culture and principles within department and facility, maintain building How You Doin’ program and committee

  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Intellectual/Social demands:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits.  Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Employees in this role will constantly be in leadership role; this requires directing others either verbally or in writing to complete tasks in prescribed time frame.  This position also requires constant use of interpersonal skills including: ability to direct/motivate/inform staff and foster collaboration, being able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate in writing and verbally with clients.


Physical demands:

While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee constantly operates a computer and other office devices such telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc; occasionally moves about inside the office to access storage areas, cabinets and office machinery; constantly moves about the arena and event sites before, during and after events to service clients and supervise staff; constantly communicates via telephone, email and in-person with others to exchange accurate information.


Work environment:

The duties of this position are usually performed indoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud during events and minimal during non-event times.
